The Application Process

Selection of Interns
​

STEER faculty will select 4-5 fellows who best match their respective research programs. These fellows will be selected in collaboration with professors at our partner HBCUs. These collaborators were chosen because they have established relationships with one or more of the UCLA faculty mentors, their own teaching and research are related to educational achievement, and they have regular contact with undergraduates who have interests in education research. 
 
STEER Fellows Can Expect:
 
  • The promise of full funding for doctoral study at a University of California school (promised upon acceptance at a UC school)

  • To conduct research with several world-class research faculty at UCLA’s Top Ranked School of Education & Information Studies

  • To receive hands-on mentorship and learn skills to better conduct research and prepare for graduate school

  • Fully paid Princeton Review GRE Course

  • Stipend

  • This Summer's 2023 Program is a hybrid program: 

    •      Virtual/Remote 6/12 -7/7 & Residential 7/10-8/4

 

 

Eligibility


Eligible fellows will be upperclassmen and recent undergraduates at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Priority will be given to rising seniors; however, rising juniors and recent graduates may apply. Applicants must have a maintained major GPA of 3.0

We are currently accepting applications on a rolling admission, and will announce when applications are going to be close. We typically accept 4-5 students for the program, so if you are interested, please apply ASAP for the best chance of consideration.

Your complete STEER application must include the following items:

​

  • A Research Statement

    • A 1-2 page single-spaced statement describing your experiences and/or interests in education and how this program might benefit your career and academic trajectory

  • Unofficial College Transcript 

  • Resume/CV

  • Name of 1 Faculty Member who can provide a letter of support

    • Please provide the email address and name of the faculty member writing your letter in your application email 

  • Interview with a member of the STEER Staff

    • This will be conducted after STEER receives your completed application

  • Complete Online Application Survey

Submitting Materials

Your unofficial transcript (an official transcript will be requested upon admittance), research statement and resume may be emailed to STEER2023.UCLA@gmail.com. Please attach .pdf documents only. Please use the following format in the subject line of your email: "STEER Program Application Summer 2023 - applicant name".

Please note that complete application packets will be considered as they arrive.

Once you have submitted your materials, please email the team at STEER2023.UCLA@gmail.com informing them that your application is complete. We will then work with you to set up a brief interview via Zoom.
